biggest game in 18 years. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. thank you for joining us on this january 28th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. we go straight to steve. a little chilly this morning. >> yeah a little chilly this morning. but the rest of the day looking good. just a weak system dropping down from the forth. you can see it right there not a lot to it. after the clouds clear, little be sunny to mostly sunny but breezy and cool. here is sal. steve, gone. westbound 80 getting more crowded as you drive from the albany hill down to the mccarthur maze. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving westbound bay bridge coming up to the toll plaza area. but it is getting more crowded. another few minutes they will turn the metering lights on. let's go back to the desk. topping our news this morning the chp is looking to

witnesses to a deadly accident on the peninsula. one child, one teenager and one young adult were all killed on highway 92 in foster city. tara moriarty joins us now with more on the victims. tara. >> reporter: one family in redwood city stands to lose three sons from this accident. they already lost a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old and now their 18-year-old son is fighting for his life. it happened shortly before 10:00 last night off highway 92. that time is important to remember. if you were drive in the eastbound direction near the foster city boulevard exit, the chp needs your help. officers are looking for witnesses. they still aren't sure what caused the accident. initial reports say it could have been a hit and run. two lanes of eastbound 92 had to be shut down for three hours last night after the driver of a silver honda accord slammed into a guardrail knocking over utility poll and a box. five people were inside. two pronounced dead on the

scene. another died on the way to the hospital. >> it appears the vehicle was traveling in the number three lane and for an unknown reason he lost control of the vehicle and overturned when he hit the rail. >> reporter: it's not known how many of the victims were wearing seat belts. the chp is look into whether this could be alcohol or drug related. the 21-year-old driver who died was from san mateo. his 18-year-old cousin walked away with only minor injuries. again the other 18-year-old is at stanford medical center with major injuries. if you did witness this crash you are asked to contact the chp. live from foster city i'm tara moriarty. another deadly accident to tell you about. the crash caused a traffic nightmare last night on westbound interstate 880. that happened just before 9:00. five people were in a black suv

when the driver lescol. time is 6:03. the police search -- the cp says the driver smashed into high tension power lines around 1:30 this morning. the driver then ran away from the crash scene. at one point about 3,000 homes and businesses had no electricity in the neighborhood. that number we're told is now down to about a thousand. happening now in palo alto some homes are in the dark because of an under ground vault fire in one neighborhood there. janine de la vega is in palo alto now to tell what is the neighborhoods say they need and saw. >> reporter: well the fire is out. so the is electricity in this you can also see there are curious neighbors that may have

had their power out. a lot of the focus is again to be a manhole cover. at about 4:30 a neighbor called 911 after hearing a big boom. he ran outside and saw flames a few feet high shooting from the manhole. firefighters arrived and used a large canister hooked on to the trailer to extinguish the fire. >> it sounded like a big explosion. and i went outside the door. i seen the smoke on the street. >> reporter: did you see the fire? >> i saw the fire. >> reporter: how high was it? >> about five hoot. now that the fire is out, that shelter in -- they are not sure

what the cause of the fire is. right now here yo can see of the resident rushing to they're home. firefighters are saying it is safe to be here now. but as far as the power we're told pg&e doesn't supply the power. this is the city of palo alto. it's their utility workers that are out here. trying to see if they can restore power to this neighborhood. reporting live from palo alto janine de la vega. a judge will hold a hearing today for the man accused of killing seven people at oakland's oikos university last year. one goh was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. goh is being held without jail on prosecutors say he flew into a violent rage because he was

angry about auation refound. that yesterday a veteran was shot and wounded by a suspect. five days earlier on january 21st, an under cover officer was shot and wounded while working on seminary avenue. full recoveries are expected for both officers. time now 6:06. the 49ers now in the big easy in new orleans getting ready for the super bowl. fans are waiving their 49ers flag as the team took off yesterday. their plane touched down in new orleans last night. the 49ers are favored to beat the baltimore ravens in the super bowl. 49ers are undefeated in five super bowl appearances. the last time they won was in 1995. the current campaign for the lombardi trophy marks the 49ers quest for six championships. despite all the hoopla

sometime in 2015. the plan calls for a waterfront park and 1,000 apartments along with office buildings and restaurants and shops. it's designed to serve baseball fans and many people wholly in that fast growing neighborhood. time now 6:08. sal is back. you have highway 101 prepared for the folks this morning? >> that is right. we're looking at 101 dave and pam. northbound 101 traffic does look good approaching the 80 split. if you are driving from 280 the downtown area. that is about a five minute drive. not much right now at all. bay bridge toll plaza on the other hand we are getting a little bit more of a delay. if you're in the outbound lanes it's a five minute delay. southbound 101 looks good heading down the peninsula. and highway 1 is also looking good. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. system weak as it may be dropping straight down out of the north. it will be cooler today. partly cloudy here in the

morning. mostly sunny here in the afternoon. a little chill in the morning air. everything says sunny and warmer weather the rest of the week. today because of that nature where that system came from the north is going to give us more of a northerly feel here. mostly cloudy. there could be a few very, very light showers. i think most of it is done. a chilly start and after that everything says sunshine and warmer weather to end january. next sign of any rain around february 5th or so. mid 60s look likely. back edge of this system already zooming right through mendocino county and lake county. 30s and 40s on the temps. we'll settle into the mid 50s today after this system boot scoots out of the area. so cooler and breezy. a chilly start. sol morning clouds and sunny. there could be a few high clouds embracing down from the north. 50s on the temps. 54-58 i think north to south will cover the spread today. tomorrow morning will be cold. especially wind protected areas. we'll get lower 30s and a few

time is 6:13. in brazil the first funerals will be held today for the victims of a deadly nighttime fire that killed 230 people. brazil's president declared three days of warning and canceled upcoming cup celebrations. pyrotechnics may have caused that fire. many of the victims died from smoke inhalation or trampled to death trying to get out of there. some of the survivors talked about being trapped briefly by security guards. >> people who were inside the facility informed us when they came out that security guards blocked the exit to prevent people there from leaving. that is when the crowd started panicking and the tragedy grew worse. >> about 2,000 people were in the club. that is device the maximum occupancy. they also say the nightclubs license had expired. a woman who survived a

deadly nightclub fire in rhode island back in 2003 says she is devastated to hear about that tragedy in brazil. >> i feel like i have done so much and i've spoken so many places. trying to educate the world on why our fire happened and let's learn from it and never make sure it happened again. and dittied. >> she suffered severe burns at the nation nightclub. her fiance was one of the 100 victims that died. that fire was also caused by pyrotechnics. key senators in washington are laying out their tragedy to reform immigration. as kyla campbell reports both republicannest and democrats have a plan for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the united states. kyla. >> reporter: one of the biggest debates with immigration reform is to whether or not help those that that are here illegally to

president joe biden will talk about gun control with police chiefs and sheriffs. this is all part of a push by the obama administration for new policies for curbing gun violence. after the connecticut school shootings. president obama and sick tear of state medically clinton appearing to talk about their unusual partnership. >> i want the country to appreciate what an extraordinary row she. >> many people were surprised when president obama asked hilary clinton be secretary of state following their tough campaigning in the 2008 presidential campaign. but they now say they have a close relationship.

supreme court justiceson somewhere sotomayor will be in the bay area today. she is the first latino appointed to the high court. she is on tour to promote her book my beloved life. the event begins at noon at the harps theater in san francisco. it is sold out. time now 6:17. the oakland a's got an early start to the baseball season with a big cheer from their fans. now that is a cheer. yesterday was the team's annual fan fest and it was sold out. the players posed for pictures. they signed autographs, chatted with their fans. tickets by the way for the a's upcoming season also went on sale yesterday with hundreds of people waiting in line at least an hour before they went on sale. the san jose sharks are hot. with only five games played in the shortened season so far the sharks won them all. the sharks play the vancouver canucks last night.

for the first time this season patrick marlo did not score two goals but he did get the winning shot in the second period. bringing the sharks their fifth win with a final of 4-1. marl opened the season tying an nhl record from 1970 with four multiple goal games. 6:18 is the time. let's check with sal. starting in contra costa county. >> we're looking at that. it looks pretty good pam and dave. so far 680, 24, 242 not a big commute so far. things are getting more crowded definitely. highway 24 right through lafayette and orinda looking pretty good. when you get to the toll plaza the metering lights went on about ten minutes ago. and the traffic is backing up beyond the 880 over crossing. that is about a five to ten minute delay. no problems on the bridge getting into san francisco. if you're driving into livermore valley westbound 580

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:24 is the time. and this is quite a treat. some whale watchers off the san diego coast got to see. they came across a pod of gray whales believed to be one of the largest ever seen in the area. marine experts usually say the whales travel in groups of three but there were about 20- 25 whales in this pod. several miles of the mississippi river remain closed to river traffic today. that is after an oil barge carrying 80,000 gallons of crude oil hit a railroad bridge. they do not know how much oil spilled. time is 6:24. a lot of 49er fans that were not going to the super bowl in new orleans they are shopping for new tvs to watch the game. there has been a run on hd tvs at the best buy store in

emeryville. prices have dropped. many flat screen tvs and the fact that the 49ers are playing that has boosted sales. >> it picks up around the super bowl any way. now there is an extra rush just because the 49ers are in it. >> best buy sighs this time -- says this time of year is a popular time to buy tvs. it's not just because of the super bowl. a lot of stores marked down lasteers tv to make room for the newer tvs which will come out as soon as march. if you are salivating over the super bowl, you may be hungry for you ready? for a harburger. boulevard burger make these burgers you are looking at made for jim and john harbaugh. it has two beef patties described as all american just like jim. the jim-bo is taller than the baltimore johnny boy. that is named for john harbaugh

dignitaries from peru. durable good orders coming in. it looks like it will take things up today. good morning. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. the chp investigating a horrible accident on the freeway. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now with more on this tragic crash and the investigation. >> reporter: a redwood city family is in mourning after losing two of their sons. ages 12 and 16 and now a third son age 18 is clinging to life. all three were involved in a car accident. a car flipped not too far from where we are standing. it happened about ten minutes to 10:00 last night off highway 92. that time is important to remember. if you were driving in in the eastbound direction near the foster city boulevard exit, the

under ground vault fire. that happened about 4:30 this morning on dana avenue. neighbors say they heard a big boom and saw flames shooting out of a manhole. coming up at 7:00 on mornings on 2 we will go back live to the scene for an update on the repairs there. time is 6:32. in san francisco this morning a preliminary hearing goes on for four people accused of killing a suspected pimp. now the case surrounds a fatal shooting last summer of 22-year- old calvin sneed. the parents of a 17-year-old girl and two others killed sneed because he forced the girl into a life of prostitution. the da's office says this was a case of vigilante justice. attorneys for the defendants say they are convinced their clients will be acquitted. a former east bay swim coach convicted on child pornography charges will start serving his sentence today. alex burr etch has to serve five years in prison and pay a $2,000 fine. they found a lot of amount of

graphic child pornography in his home. he was an elementary schoolteacher and youth swim coach in pittsburg. police are hoping a newly released video will help them find a bank robber. this man robbed the north american bank january 13th. he's described as wait, in his 30s between 5'6"-6'1". this marks the seventhback robbery -- seventh bank robbery in the last few weeks. time to talk super bowl. 49ers. the 49ers are in the big easy. new orleans. they will be addressing the media again today after they wake up. ktvu sports reporter joe fonzi is also in new orleans right now. he was with us earlier. he is back now. joe, you're part of a team of reporters bringing us live reports from the big easy. >> reporter: we told you last hour everywhere you turn in new

have a lot of activities planned today. baltimore ravens a little bit later. we're thinking for our next hit pennies and coffee. reporting live there new orleans i'm joe fonzi. >> i love it. thank you. the 49ers are getting all the super bowl attention right now in new orleans. that will change. later today that is because the baltimore ravens are due to arrive in new orleans this afternoon. they will arrive about 2:00. ravens coach john harbaugh and a few of his key players they will sit down and hold a news conference in just about an hour. the last of four benefit concerts was held over the weekend for injured giants fan bryan stow. san francisco giant's third base coach tim flannery performed with his band last night in stow's hometown in santa cruz. stow's family attended the event to accept the money for stow's recovery.

>> you can tell something is wrong and he just looks really sad but he can't explain why. we just hug him and kiss him. and you know he will pucker up and want a kiss first. >> stow was severely beatenned a dodgers stadium on opening day two years ago. flanker rehas raised -- flannery has raised about $70,000 for stow. little gnomes are taking over oakland. and while some are calling them cute, others say they are a nuisance. ktvu brian flores is joining us live. he is near lake merit where a lot of these little beings are being found. >> reporter: it's the little gnomes like this one right here that are taking over oakland around lake merit area as you mentioned. they are basically like a six inch piece of wood with a gnome that is painted on it. some have a mushroom along the side of the gnome as well. the issue lies with how many are low dated and where they are located. now the issue started showing up a year ago. the amount is certainly growing

in numbers. there are few that have popped up in certain locations like coffee shops but a variety end up on the bottom of utility poles around lake merit and as far as east 18th street. mg, runs those poles and the gnomes have to go. the reason according to a spokesperson is that it may inspire others to place things on their property and could compromise the integrity of the equipment. now we should point out the wooden gnomes are screwed into the poles and not just placed there. pg&e says they will dispatch crews not exactly sure when but they will be taking them down soon. the gnomes have made some happier. >> i love the gnomes. i think they are super cute. i don't see anything wrong with them being there. i love the fact someone actually hand painted them. took the time out. drilled them on. i understand it could be a problem with pg&e but i don't really see it. i love them. they bring a smile to may face. >> reporter: one person who was

good morning, to you. the chp i just talked with a spokesperson a few moments ago and confirmed indeed investigators are taking a very close look at that viral video that emerged showing the dangerous stunt in the middle of #-- of 880. this is where it happened in the middle of the day on saturday. as we drove along the freeway we could see tons of tire marks on the roadway. this is the video that surfaced on youtube over the weekend. it shows several cars doing donuts in the middle of the freeway in the middle of the day on saturday. traffic at the time was brought to a standstill on 880. now the video last less than two minutes until someone yells out 5-0. warning the driver that police officers are on the way. this stunt was a dangerous

distraction for other drivers and people who have seen the video are hoping the chp can find the people involved. >> i would hope whoever is responsible that the highway patrol or whomever do whatever they need to do to make sure that doesn't happen again. >> and the chp confirms to ktvu they have quite a few witnesses and quite a few stipes that have come in. investigators are hoping that those witnesses and tips can lead them to the drivers who were involved in this shut down of 880 over the weekend and the chp spokesperson i talked to a short time ago are hoping to have an update on their investigation at some point later on in the day. live in oakland alex savidge. your time is 6:46. police in seattle say a man shot two people in a bar before he himself was killed by the police. it happened last night. investigators say the shooter fired shots at his 25-year-old x-girlfriend at the bar. he also shot at a bouncer who

home from a fishing trip rescued them minutes later. >> i could hear them calling for help. we had a visual on them. we tried to head them off. they were going southbound at a pretty good clip. >> doctors are now treating that couple for hypothermia. i know you remember the captain. he safely landed a passenger jet on the hudson river. that was four years ago. right now at 6:48. we want to go back over to sal. it's busy at the toll plaza. >> a lot of people trying to get into the city. westbound bay bridge about a 20 minute wait here. not unusual but it is not a light commute right now. in fact, probably should get a little busier as the morning wares on. hopefully we will see relief in the 8:00 hour. right now it's certainly a big delay. let's move along and take a look at san francisco. northbound 101 traffic does look good if you try to catch a flight at sfo.

around the sierra we will get a few snow shower showers. cooler and breezy today. after today everything says sunshine and warmer temps. but mid 50s today. they will be held down. this will be the coolest day of the week. temperatures will really start to warm up. cold tomorrow morning. we will get upper 20s and 30s north. but then after that sunshine severe clear looks like mild to warm temps. partly cloudy by sunday. a report this morning says japan's government eased its safety standards to help fast track the boeing 787. japan's two biggest airlines pressed the tokyo government. japanese companies supplied one- third of the components dream liner 787. today the joint u.s. and japanese investigation into the jets shifts its focus to the company that makes the battery monitoring system. exxon mobile is now the world's most valuable company.

welcome back to the ktvu morning news. the australian radio show responsible for the prank has been taken off the air permanently. last month the show was suspended after a nurse committed suicide after she put through a call from the show's djs to the ward where the duchess of cambridge was recooperating from morning sickness. the dj's played the prank call on their show. your time is 6:54. this morning the judge will hear closing arguments in the retrial of debra madden. she is the former san francisco police crime technician accused of stealing cocaine from the crime lab.

as a result hundreds of drug cases was thrown out. madden's first trial ended in a miss trial. madden admitted she did take a small amount of cocaine from the lab but says only the cocaine that was spilled as it was being weighed. today investigators in fairfield will be back at the scene of a major fire at a landmark friday night. the original pepper bellies comedy and variety theater was completely destroyed. no word yet on what caused that fire. investigators were hoping to find more clues when they searched through the debris later this morning. san francisco firefighters say years of intense training paid off when they rescued an elderly man. fire crews were called to a home at brazil avenue yesterday afternoon. they found the garage burning. the home filled with smoke and elderly man who could not walk in an upstairs bedroom. firefighters immediately got the man safely out of that home. his condition is not known. time now 6:56. very scary moments this weekend
